Musical Thoughts: Soup Season
It's been a while since we wrote on some music so we decided let's go back to where it started: independent local artists. We got a opportunity to listen to a young singer by the name of Ni-Emah Bugg based in Brooklyn, New York. After a brief conversation on social media we decided to listen to her new EP titled Soup Season where every song is titled after a flavor of soup. The seven song EP comes off like a throwback mixtape that one would play when they need a pick me up from a breakup or getting themselves right for what the day brings. Late Night Dinner starts off the EP with a smooth jazz beat with a dialogue in a diner. After that Ni-Emah starts a slow strut that is hypnotic and calming as if she at the jazz club singing for the overnight crowd. The song is a great start as we get into the rest of the EP named after soups. Tomato, Tomato is probably the best of the EP with a calm piano and Bugg's low voiced chorus which is catchy after a while. With lyrics like "With this life you putting on a show but I do not know for who" is a sign of what not to do while in a relationship and stop making mistakes. A great relationship song that showcases the ups and downs but with a wonderful backing track. Grilled Cheese is a break where the beats are a little faster and a manic continuation of Tomato, Tomato but a build up going into the second half of the EP which starts with Instant Noodles. Instant Noodles may sound poppy but the lyrics will say otherwise. Reminiscent of early Jill Scott, Bugg brings out a straightforward approach to her partner to let them know her feelings about the relationship. The EP closes out with Broccoli Cheese a ode to the classic beef and broccoli Timberlands that graced NYC streets in the late 90s and 2000s. A uptempo beat where a high hat and keyboard blends in nicely. A rap chorus that compliments the theme. It definitely a track to vibe out to on a late night at home or about to go out on a date. Overall there is stellar production and great songwriting for this EP and we definitely recommend that this Soup Season will warm you up this winter.
